FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS…

What is CranioSacral therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a hands-on therapy, where the touch is gentle, non-invasive and subtle.  CranioSacral Therapy affects the central nervous system to assist in improving function in the whole body. We work with the client's inner physician, the knowing part to guide us to what needs to be released, worked on or shifted. The client is therefore empowered in and by the session as we are following them and meeting them where they are at today. It is a subtle system that uses non invasive touch to supports the body’s natural and innate ability to heal. By working with deep listening skills and practiced hands we are able to assess and feel where there may be restrictions in the body. We then can assist the body by working with the restricted patterns held in the tissues to release and unwind. Once the tissue and fascia restrictions have released, often the Central Nervous System has more fluid flow and space, this all contributes to tissue repair and self healing within the body.

We are aiming to work and treat the CranioSacral rhythm that is felt by the CranioSacral system, which is made up of the cerebrospinal fluid that is produced in brain ventricles. It flows between the meninges of the brain and up and down the dural tube membranes that surround the spinal cord. The bones in the head attach to the meninges in the brain, and the dural tube at the sacrum. During the session we feel the rhythm of this system and how it is experienced through the connective tissue in the body (the fascia), when there are restrictions here we can feel the affects in many other systems in the body such as the digestive or endocrine. Ideally the fascia and structures are well aligned, but as we live life we experience not so optimal conditions, tension patterns or situations (trauma) which can affect the system ( the fascia and nervous system) and as a result our system may not be as flowing and spacious as it could be.

An important part of the CST approach is that the person’s body that knows exactly what to do in order to heal itself, and all we are really doing is listening to what it needs and helping it to do it! We do not try and figure out what is wrong and then try to fix it. This can mean that the area we treat is sometimes different from the area in which symptoms are experienced, as our bodies can be very clever in how they adapt to stresses and strains.

In CranioSacral Therapy we say that the body is in a state of organised dysfunction, as it is very good at creating coping strategies or patterns to compensate itself. In a treatment we work with the disorganisation of the body and ask the dysfunction to organise more functionally.

What will a CranioSacral technique treatment will be like to receive?

Treatments are done on a clothed body, with the receiver usually lying on their back on a treatment couch. If this is not comfortable, we can treat people on their side or even sitting. We may start at the feet or the head with our different evaluative techniques, and this will help us figure out where your body needs us to start.

When we learn to work with these techniques, there is usually a natural focus around the head and vertebral column, but treatments are by no means restricted to these areas. Factors that compromise posture and function can be present throughout the whole body and, by using the CranioSacral rhythm and accessing the CranioSacral system, because it acts on the deepest structures and organs of the nervous system, CST techniques influence movement and coordination, pain pathways, the digestive system, the respiratory system, heart function, the endocrine system… potentially the majority of the body systems.

Receiving CranioSacral Therapy tends to be very relaxing and positively pleasurable. Ignored or hidden problems are resolved as often as those for which help was initially sought.

What is CranioSacral therapy good for?

Many people find CranioSacral Therapy effective for a wide range of problems associated with discomfort, pain and dysfunction. Because it works with the central nervous system and is such a light and non invasive therapy it is often recommended for anxiety and can be particularly effective for patients with headaches and migraine, neck and back pain, anxiety and depression. It can also be used for maintenance or general health and more regularly for more chronic problems.

Please also be aware that I do not make any diagnoses about medical conditions. I also highly recommend that anyone with a medically diagnosed condition, choosing to use CranioSacral Therapeutic techniques, does so with the full knowledge and cooperation of their medical specialist.

Post treatment

After a session we recommend staying hydrated and warm, sometimes you may even like to take a short nap.

As mentioned above we say that the body is in a state of organised dysfunction as it is very good at creating coping strategies or patterns to compensate itself. In a treatment we disorganise the body and ask the dysfunction to organise more functionally. This can mean that after a session you may feel some slight discomfort (body aches) as the body gets used to the new, readjusted alignment. This is very normal, so please try to take it easy for the next few days.
